A trained actor of stage and screen, Hoffman worked steadily since his 1991 film debut in Triple Bogey on a Par Five Hole. But nobody noticed until director Paul Thomas Anderson cast him as creepy lackey Scotty in 1997's Boogie Nights. He followed that acclaimed performance with a string of oddball characters in Flawless, Magnolia, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Almost Famous and 2005's Capote, which earned the actor his first Best Actor Oscar.
