After a casting director discovered Howard on a New York street, he landed roles in notable TV series like The Cosby Show. He then received his first breakout film role in 1995's Mr. Holland's Opus. Gradually, Howard developed a reputation for portraying provocative supporting characters, such as in Dead Presidents and The Best Man. Though his piano-playing role in Ray was overshadowed by close pal, Jamie Foxx's performance, Howard is a self-taught musician with enormous talent.
